Detroit Michigan Coffee Roasters
Whether it’s in the gentrified suburbs or downtown core, Detroit is booming with great cafes serving excellent local roasters. With brand new spots opening seemingly every week, from community shops highlighting the work of Black and brown coffee farmers to spaces that offer culturally relevant cuisine, there’s no shortage of options for java lovers.
Located on Trumbull Ave just across from Wayne State University’s athletic complex, the Detroit Michigan Coffee Roasters focuses on—you guessed it—bikes and coffee. The big, square bar clad in wood from two demolished Hamtramck homes hosts several different roasters (Heart Roasters and Bonanza are recent additions), and the back wall houses an already busy bicycle repair shop. It’s a cozy, repurposed space that seems to have hit on the perfect intersection of coffee people and bike people.
Detroit Michigan Coffee Roasters: Spotlight on Sabbath Coffee
A new addition to the burgeoning Midtown area, this cafe features roasting and brewing on one side of a small space and community tables and nooks on the other. The space was designed with meet-ups and play dates in mind, so grab a table to huddle around or settle down at the bar for a long chat. The menu includes espresso drinks and a lineup of sweets from the bakery next door.
Located above a barbershop on Broadway St, Populace has the look of a laid-back saloon with a big curved bar clad in wood, mural-covered chalkboard walls, and plenty of antiques and Detroit ephemera. They serve a rotating selection of domestic and international guest coffees made via batch brew or the Hario V60, as well as their own house roasts, all brewed on a white La Marzocco FB80.
